GRINDING THE AXES OF OUR FATHERS

I figure I'm subconsciously teaching my kids to grind their grandfather's axes, anyway. So why not make it a learning experience? Why not take their subconscious inheritance and allow them to subsume it within metaphor?

In all honesty, I barely remember what pissed of my father. People who drove other automobiles than his own. The John Birch Society. Bigots of all kinds. But I couldn't pinpoint specific causes he'd be for or against. I miss that. I wish I could tell them "Your grandfather used to say..." and tell some story from the past.

But I'd have to make the stories up. So instead, I teach them how to sharpen axes. For when the day comes when they have their own.
