THROW ME THE BALL, DAD

Football was a big thing between us. We watched it, we played it in the backyard. I think he was dead by the time my mom let me play organized football, so he never saw me catch a touchdown pass or sack a quarterback.

I still have an object that's related to him, one I'm not sure he ever touched. A full-sized NFL football that we got from the "factory reject" pile at a football specialty store.

Of course it has a story, then and now. Would it be worth keeping if it didn't?

For years I kept
the football in a box of father relics. I've loosened my grip on it lately, as opposed to the way I cling to and/or hoard other father-associated objects. It lives in the basement with the kids' toys now, and we pull it out on occasion. Good, clean family fun.
