I didn't reach puberty until I was well past sixteen, and didn't lose my virginity until I was a month shy of twenty. Man, did I feel like a failure in the hypersexualized world around me. And it was the 1980s––I can't imagine how bad I'd feel enduring it today, when ten-year-olds are calling each other sexy and teenagers kill themselves (and each other) because they can't get dates. I guess I lucked out by going through all this shit in a more innocent era.
