EVERY TENTH OF JANUARY
It's been almost forty years since my father died on January 10, 1975, but I still get maudlin and depressed every time the day rolls around. Even if I mark it on my calendar, it catches me off-guard. I get bitchy, withdrawn, short with others. I tend to avoid my mother, too, because the ditch of my own sadness is deep enough.
Sometimes I re-commemorate the day he died. But I'm not completely morbid and joyless, you know. I celebrate his birthday, too.
