WRITING AND MY SONS

This path––another one that's likely to grow with time––is about a relationship that barely exists: my sons meeting me as a writer, and me meeting my sons as a writer.

Lucas and Landon know their father as a writer, as I knew mine as a writer––though I hope they know me better. My dad didn't share his work with me, which was understandable given that he wrote about ne'er-do-wells and criminals. I write about anger and lust and spiritual lost-ness, so I'm unlikely to encourage my kids to sit down and read my work until they're older.

The summer between high school and college, I'm guessing. Though maybe they'll sneak a look at Wifeshopping earlier, when the hormones kick in. I'd rather they do that than look at porn, you know? And they'll get a more realistic portrait of human relationships anyway.

Whenever I put a book out, I give them a copy. I sign it, but it on their shelves along with Dr. Seuss or Harry Potter or whatever it is they're reading. Trying to make it a book among books. Just one more that they own, though (I hope) a bit more special.

What will I do with daddylabyrinth, though? I can't physically give them a copy. I don't want to give them the link and say "Have at it" because there are too many F-bombs and too much talk about drugs, sex, violence, booze, etc. Maybe they'll sneak a peak at it someday, though to find out where they come from.

The summer between high school and college. Check back in with me then.
