WHO WAS CHARLES V. ICKES?

I don't have any photos of the man whose orders my father refused to obey. But I do know, from a tiny bit of web research, that First Lieutenant Charles V. Ickes was a real soldier. I can tell because he later earned a Distinguished Service Cross (above) for his valor in Korea.

And as much as I love the scofflaw part of my dad and the free-spiritedness if gave me, I have to respect the heck out of Charles V. Ickes. He died in 1995 as a Lieutenant Colonel and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, as I'm sure is fitting.

Man, he must have been pissed at my dad. When I try to see the situation through his eyes, now that the rebellion and romance of having a scofflaw for a father has worn down from thinking about it too much, I can completely understand why.

Another thing about Charles V. Ickes, the man my father refused to obey. His son became a soldier too, and rose to the rank of Brigadier General and C.O.O. of the Air National Guard.

And my dad? Well, he dropped out. He dropped the ball.
