THE GREAT ESCAPE
Paterson Youth, 3 Others Escape from Reformatory
(UNDATED) Thomas Wingate, 18-year-old Patersonian who last January was sentenced to Annandale Reformatory for a series of breaking and entering offenses in the Little Falls-Totowa Borough area, is one of four youths who escaped from the reformatory Thursday night after overpowering an officer and locking him in a steam room. Authorities in Annandale said today that Wingate is still being sought with the other youths.
The youths jumped from an un-barred third-floor window. A fifth inmate, a juvenile, was frustrated in the escape when he suffered a broken leg and was captured.
Wingate, whose home address is 221 W. Broadway, was sentenced to Annandale Reformatory for an indeterminate term last Jan. 12 by County Judge Alexander M. MacLeod who gave the youth credit for time spent in County Jail. He was charged in three indictments with breaking, entering and larceny and three other indictments with breaking and entering with intent to steal.
Among the places he broke into last Nov. 1 were Passaic Valley High School where he took $30 in cash and a camera valued at $10 with the assistance of another youth who received a suspended sentence; the Little Falls Bowling Alleys where he took $50 in merchandise and Al's Reet Treat in Little Falls where he took considerable candy and cigarettes. He also broke into the Delaware Lackawana and Western Railroad freight and passenger station in Totowa Borough, the Fred C. Hennie coal company in Totowa Borough and attempted to enter Russ's Esso service station on Route 6. He took nothing in those places.
Others who broke out of Annandale are Roy Allen Corby, 19, of Union City; Chester Farrell, 19, of Jersey City, and James Ullven, 20, of Saugus, Mass.
P.S.: They got caught.
