FOLLOWING THE THREAD OUT
Ariadne was the ancient Greek keeper of the labyrinth who, falling in love with Theseus, gave him a sword and a ball of thread so he could backtrack his way out of Minos' labyrinth after he dispatched the minotaur.
It would be nice and neat to insert myself into this tale, with my father in the role of the minotaur and me as Theseus. My wife Jenny, who helped break the minotaur down, could play Ariadne. But in an alternate configuration I am the minotaur––and in that case
WHO MUST SLAY ME?
My children?
Myself?
So maybe I'm not so easily inserted into this myth. There appears to be nobody home inside the labyrinth, and my task inside it was more akin to Herakles cleaning up the stables of King Augeus. (Thankfully I had more than a day to do it.)
But there's still a thread to follow––a path toward making myself right. That much of the labyrinth tale I'll cling to because without it, I have no path at all.
