DEAR U.S. ARMY, PLEASE REVISIT THE PAST
In 1990, by mother officially tried to get the Army to reconsider what was by then a forty-year-old case. The detail is a bit fuzzy, both in this JPG and the original document, but the important parts read thusly:
8. I REQUEST THE FOLLOWING CORRECTION OF ERROR OR INJUSTICE: His emotional problems should have been considered before his enlistment.
9. I BELIEVE THE RECORD TO BE IN ERROR OR UNJUST IN THE FOLLOWING PARTICULARS: His temperament was such that he was not able to withstand the discipline of Army life.
11B. IF MORE THAN THREE YEARS SINCE THE ALLEGED ERROR OR INJUSTICE WAS DISCOVERED, STATE WHY THE BOARD SHOULD FIND IT IN THE INTEREST OF JUSTICE TO CONSIDER THIS APPLICATION. Perhaps if this information is brought to the attention of those involved, young men and women may not have to go through rejection.
There's nothing military here, everything's emotional. But my mom has always operated from a position of presumed emotional rightness in the face of unfair treatment, so it's no surprise she approached the U.S. Army with that same tone.
Interesting factoid: the "date of discovery" listed in 11A is January, 1963. That's when my parents got married. How soon after the wedding did the campaign start? Did my dad ever try to get his name cleared by himself, or was it always my mom at the head of the crusade?
